Spangles Crop

We are a Ladies’ Barbershop Harmony Chorus and we are the 2011 and  2013 Champions of Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. We meet at the Las Claras Centre in Los Narejos, Los Alcázares, Murcia, Spain every Thursday.

If you would like to visit one of our rehearsals, we’d love to see you. Rehearsals run from 10:00am until 1pm.

Spangles was formed in December 2004 with just five ladies. Today, the chorus has grown to more than 40 members. We are always happy to welcome new members, so why not come along and see if you would like to join us too?

Spangles Chorus

Our Music

We sing a variety of popular songs, mostly with a rock or blues feel. Since barbershop originates in America, many songs come from there. However, more and more great songs are now available in 4 part harmony and many are especially written for ladies barbershop choruses, so we are spoilt for choice.

We also sing a number of Christmas songs; the festive season being one of our busiest times of the year.

What is Barbershop?divas-wanted

Barbershop originated in the USA in the early 1900′s. Men waiting for their turn at the barbershop used to sing to pass away the time, and they sang in harmony. Over the years Barbershop has developed into a specific style of harmony; we sing in four parts: Bass, Baritone, Tenor and Lead. We are always looking for new singers, particularly those with lower voices. Most people who have heard of Barbershop assume that it is only sung by men. However, there is a strong women’s Barbershop following throughout the world, including the UK and Europe. The Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers boasts 50+ Choruses, with some comprising in excess of 70 members and Sweet Adelines International has 600 choruses and over 115,000 members worldwide..

Barbershop is about singing in harmony, but also being in harmony. It is the ideal platform to make new friends and sing together at social events in our area. Our main aim is to ensure that our audiences find our performances entertaining and enjoyable…

… and we always ensure that we enjoy ourselves too!

Sing Yourself Happy

There is now significant research evidence on the value of singing for health and wellbeing. Professor Stephen Clift of the Sidney De Haan Research Centre at Canterbury Christ Church University, the only research institution in the world that focuses on singing and health, says, ‘A growing body of research shows that singing is good for wellbeing. So people can join in with singing and have a good time and know that it’s doing their health good too.’

Why is Singing Good For Us?

  • Singing stimulates happiness, which counteracts feelings of sadness and depression
  • Singing involves concentration, which blocks preoccupation with sources of worry
  • Singing involves deep controlled breathing, which helps with relaxation
  • Singing in groups offers social support and friendship, which relieves feelings of loneliness

Hi, really enjoyed your performance at the Flamingo Benidorm last week both off the cuff in the dining room and the performance at 6.00pm the following evening, having purchased your c.d. have enjoyed listening to it since our return to the UK. Good luck in April in Benalmadena and hope you go on to win the competition again. Once again many thanks for giving my husband and I the pleasure of listening to you, we particularly enjoyed your Beach Boys rendition and of course the lighthearted rendition of “What shall we do with the drunken sailor” – excellent all round entertainment – Thank you.

Thanks so much for taking the time to send this message, Pam. We really appreciate it. We had such a great time in Benidorm, letting our hair down before we get down to the hard work of contest rehearsals. The guests at the Flamingo were a great audience and so appreciative – you gave us a huge boost! We’ve been asked by the entertainments manager to contact him about a possible return. Keep an eye on the website or our Facebook page to find out what we’re up to. With love from all Spangles x

Hi to the Spangles!

I have just moved to Madrid from Australia, where I sing with Brindabella Chorus based in Canberra (lead). Really missing my singing and am wondering if any Spangles know of a singing group in Madrid I could join? If not, I’ll have to take the train to Murcia every Thursday… Hoping to hear from you soon,

Yours in harmony,

Julia Mandziy

Hi there.

I am a Sweet Adeline (bass) from Aberdeen!! I and some friends (1 of whom is also a Sweet Adeline and sings lead with Spinnaker Chorus in Hampshire!!) are going to be on a golfing break to La Manga Club from 4 – 11 June.
We would love to pop along to your Chorus rehearsal on Thurs 9 June!
Can you confirm if you will be rehearsing that day, and wouldn’t mind some visitors?
If so, can you give me some ‘idiot-proof’ directions as to how to reach you on 9th?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours, in harmony,
Lesley

Hello,
My name is Danny Roberts and I sing with The Singing Miamians of Pinecrest down here in sunny Miami, Florida. Since we have such a large population of Spanish speakers, we decided it’s time we learn some barbershop songs in Spanish. We also have a group of lovely ladies that sing in the Goldcoast Chorus that would be interested in arrangements in Spanish. Can you help?
Thanks so much, and by the way, your group looks AMAZING!
