Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus featured amongst the choruses and choirs taking part in the XIX Corales en El Mar concert in Los Alcázares last weekend. “This is one of the favourite concerts on the Spangles calendar and we feel honoured and privileged to take part each year” remarked Musical Director, Wendy Grant. Spangles delighted the predominantly Spanish audience by performing some songs in Spanish: Eres Tu, La Bamba, Cuando Calienta el Sol, as well as their signature piece, in Maori, Pokare Kare Ana. Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Ginés Pérez Cervera, presented Spangles with a commemorative plaque after their performance.

Established in December 2004 with just five ladies, Spangles now numbers more than 40 members and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year with a gala dinner dance. A perfect end to a perfect day, after a great rehearsal, was singing for the parents, teachers and students of IES RUIZ de ALDA at the Concejalía de Juventud de San Javier.

Thank you to the students for forming a 'guard of honour' as we left the auditorium and to everyone for the lovely gifts. The beautiful fans will be put to good use and we will wear our badges with great pride.

Have a super summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again in September.

We had a fabulous time singing for the wonderful LFEST audience on 9 June and we even got them singing (it wasn't hard). What a great bunch! We returned on 13 June to run a fun workshop, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

We had an absolute blast at this youth workshop in San Javier today. Great group of aspiring musicians, keen to learn the art of four part harmony singing. We will be working alongside music teacher, Carmen, to create the first youth chorus in San Javier in the new term. We’re excited to be performing for pupils, parents and teachers on 20 June. #spreadingthebarbershoplove #futureofbarbershopinspain

We had a blast in Calpe and came home with a bronze medal and the highest score in our history of 70.5%. Here are some of the photos from that trip, with special thanks to Eric Ideler for the official, on-stage photos.

What an absolute pleasure it was to be invited to provide an a cappella and barbershop 💈 workshop for this enthusiastic group of pupils, with ages ranging from 12 to 18. We had a ball and have already been invited back later this year. We are hopeful that we can get a youth chorus started here too. Photos: Lindy Easson and Polly Rimmer

We love a bit of sparkle!

It was a full house at Spangles’ concert at the Los Alcázares town hall last Friday. Organized to celebrate International Women’s Day, the ladies of this medal-winning chorus did not disappoint. “We are very grateful to the town hall for inviting us to celebrate international women’s day in the best way we know how” said MD, Wendy Grant. “Spangles is made up of some great women and we were delighted to sing for the people of the town”.

Formed in December 2004 with just five women, Spangles is in its 15th year and has grown to over 40 members who love the a cappella style of singing. They are also founder members of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) and will be heading to Calpe at the beginning of April to compete again in the SABS National Chorus Contest. “We’ve worked hard on our contest package and we hope to do well in Calpe,” remarked Wendy “but Spangles isn’t just about winning medals, we all have a love of a cappella singing and we’ve become a family, caring for and looking out for each other, through good and bad times”.

Spangles also supports local charities and has recently donated 150€ to Cruz Azul Murcia, which they helped to raise at the C Breeze Cocktail Bar in Playa Flamenca. “We very recently sang again at the bar to help raise 600€ to help a terminally ill lady be more comfortable in her last days” commented Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines.

Spangles rehearses at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares every Thursday from 10.15 to 13.15 and visitors are always welcome, so why not go along and see what it’s all about?

We love the lead up to Christmas and 2018 has been another bumper season for the ladies, who have been raising funds for local charities in several venues.

MABS Craft Fair

“Each year gets busier with requests to sing at people’s Christmas celebrations and we love to get people in the festive mood” said Wendy Grant, Chorus Musical Director.

The holiday season started with a Christmas Fayre at A Time 4 a Change in Los Alcázares, raising 345€ for Cruz Azul Murcia. This was swiftly followed by the MABS craft fair in Los Alcázares, Christmas Lights Ceremony at Spanglish in Balsicas, Spangles Christmas concert in Los Alcázares and a concert at La Manga Caravanning.

“The highlight of our Christmas season has to be when we sang for the staff and patients at Los Arcos Hospital, which was a great honour” said Co-Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “We were delighted to follow this by singing to the residents of Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo. It’s always a pleasure to entertain such lovely residents and staff.”

After enjoying their chorus Christmas lunch, Spangles rounded off their Christmas season with a fundraising concert at C Breeze Cocktail Bar in Playa Flamenca, raising an amazing 300€ for Cruz Azul Murcia and Help at Home, Costa Blanca.

2019 looks like being another busy year for Spangles who will be straight back into rehearsals at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares on 10 January, as they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April.

Are you looking for a New Year resolution? Want to meet new people? Like singing? Fancy joining this great chorus? Spangles always welcomes new members and it’s a fun way to make new friends, so why not visit when they rehearse at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares from January onwards? The group meets every Thursday from 10.15 am to 1.15 pm.
