Know you can sing but scared of looking stupid? Want to sing but don’t know where to start? Sang at school but lost confidence? Been told you can’t sing? Or just want a change from Karaoke and don’t know how?
Help is at hand! The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) is offering a free “LEARN TO SING HARMONY IN A DAY” course on Saturday, 20 May 2017 in LOS ALCÁZARES
Gain invaluable experience from members of SABS triple gold medallists, Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, and their Musical Director, Wendy Grant. Learn the techniques to help you to improve your singing. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their voice and to learn about singing four-part harmony”, comments Wendy. “Those with lower voices are particularly welcome as, in our experience, they have often been told in the past that they can’t sing, which is usually far from the truth.”
SABS President, Lyn Baines, says “We will learn a new song together and in the afternoon we will perform it for friends and family. Our method of teaching has been really successful both in the UK and in Spain, and we are expecting an enthusiastic response.”
There are limited places available, so make sure that you contact SABS by Sunday, 30 April to secure your place – email firstname.lastname@example.org now.
The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) was formed in October 2008 with the aim of encouraging the people of Spain to enjoy this unique form of a cappella, four-part harmony singing. SABS currently has members throughout Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. If you would like to find out more, please visit their website: www.sabs.es
Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus joined forces with the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Rondalla son del Mar Menor groups in a benefit concert to raise funds for those who lost everything in the devastating floods in Los Alcázares, just before Christmas. The auditorium was packed as Spangles followed the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion onto the stage. Spangles’ popularity continues to grow and they were able to invite their new ladies to join them in songs that they had already learned. Spangles finished their set with a debut performance of ‘Eres Tu’ which stunned the predominantly Spanish audience with a serious ‘goosebump moment’.
All three groups came together for a finale of the Himno Independencia Municipal which celebrates the municipal autonomy of Los Alcázares, which was granted on 13 October 1983. “It was a pleasure and an honour to be included in this very significant event to help our local community and we are certain that this will lead to further collaborations in the future.” commented Spangles MD, Wendy Grant. On the night, the concert raised a 1475€ and donations are still coming in.

Lots of hard work on our contest songs with Jack Pinto during the day, followed by an evening of fun and hilarity in twenties style. We really know how to party! Thanks to Jane Dales for the photos:
Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus love to get into the festive spirit in the lead up to Christmas and this year has been exceptional for the ladies, who have been raising charity funds in several venues.
“This has been our busiest year yet for requests to sing at peoples Christmas celebrations” said Wendy Grant, Chorus Musical Director.
The holiday season started with three events – the first at the Spanglish Bar in Balsicas, with the ladies helping turn on the Christmas lights. This was swiftly followed by a Christmas Fair at the Palm Lounge in Cabo de Palos, raising money for a local animal rescue charity. Two days later, they were singing their hearts out at the Cruz Azul animal charity’s Christmas Fair at the Bulevar Oasis in Los Alcázares.
Spangles held their traditional Christmas Concert at the town hall in Los Alcázares on 9 December and were delighted to help Crescendo Choir raise a staggering 975€ for Age Concern at a concert in Torrevieja the following day.
“Our favourite venue was yet to come” commented Lyn Baines, Co-Chorus Manager. “We were delighted to sing for the residents and staff of the Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo. They always give us a warm welcome and it’s a pleasure to sing for them each year.”
But it wasn’t over! From Pozo Aledo, Spangles went on to sing a private ladies’ lunch in Sucina!
After a short Christmas break and with many still visiting family, a small group of Spangles chorus members entered a carol competition featuring local traditional choirs and bands. This was organised by the Asociación Cultural Bahía Traíña.
“It was an honour to be offered the opportunity to demonstrate the barbershop style of singing to a new Spanish audience” remarked Wendy “And we were delighted with third place in our first non-barbershop contest.”
2017 looks like being another busy year for Spangles who will be straight back into rehearsals at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares in January, as they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April. They will also be representing SABS at the European contest in the UK in October.
Are you looking for a New Year resolution? Want to meet new people? Sing a bit? Fancy joining this champion chorus? Spangles always welcomes new members and it’s a great way to make new friends, so why not visit when they rehearse at Las Claras from 12 January onwards? The group meet every Thursday from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Well, almost! We were approached by a lovely lady from the UK, called Imani nuHu. She loves life and fashion and is an avid gospel fan. She features choir costumes on her blog, discovered our website and liked what she saw. As a consequence, she has feature Spangles on her blog with photos of our stage costumes, past and present. Thursday, 31 March saw Spangles arrive in Calpe to sunshine and a lovely sea view, ready to carry out our duties as mic-warmers, door stewards and couriers. The day was jam-packed with hotel check-in, convention registration, sound check at the theatre, rehearsal, dinner and watching a fabulous show with Musical Island Boys and LoveNotes. We then dashed back to the hotel for the opening ceremony and to take part in the Fun Show as ABBACadabra. This show kickstarts the weekend where anyone can take part, but it has to be something to make the audience laugh. It’s a great ice-breaker which was organised and compered by our own Donna Walsh.
Friday was quartet contest day and we were delighted to see three quartets, comprising Spangles members, compete. We were even more delighted to see Shiraz (Mo, Marina, Liz and Madelon) win their first silver medal – wow! Also taking part were Quartz (featuring Phil Molloy) who were awarded the highest scoring mixed quartet medal and Con-Fusion (Wendy, Heather, Linda and Carol) in their splendid red dresses.
The highlight of our weekend had to be singing Pokare Kare Ana with Musical Island Boys on the Saturday show – what an honour! This was followed by a great afterglow and a scratch quartet contest, organised and compered by Donna – we think you missed your calling Donna!
We’re looking forward to 2017 convention in Benalmádena and are already working on our contest songs. Here area few photos from SABS16 – you can find lots more on our gallery page.
Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus always looks forward to a busy festive season and this year is no exception. We sang at the HaH (Help at Home Mar Menor) Christmas Fair, for AMMA (Alzheimer’s Mar Menor Association) at Iceland in San Javier and, for the first time, for the residents of the Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo, where it was a pleasure to see the residents’ faces light up. “The lead up to Christmas is an opportunity for us to give something back to our community and we thoroughly enjoy this time of year“ said Wendy Grant, who has recently taken on the role of Musical Director, after the previous MD returned to live in the UK. A singing member of the chorus since October 2013, Wendy had never directed a chorus before, but she was more than willing to give it a try. She is an accomplished saxophone player and this has held her in good stead when getting to grips with four part harmony. Her debut as Spangles’ new MD came on 3 December at their Christmas Concert, when she acquitted herself with great professionalism and style.
“The chorus is going from strength to strength” commented co-Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “We have won the gold medal every time we have competed at the SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) convention and we need to keep ahead of the game when other choruses are snapping at our heels. Since winning earlier this year, we have concentrated on improving our sound even more and the hard work has paid off, judging from the great compliments we received from the audience after the show.” Choruses are not allowed to compete the year following their win, so Spangles will be representing Spain in Ireland in October 2016 in the international chorus contest to keep on top of their game. Never resting on their laurels, Spangles will compete in the Spanish national contest again in 2017. The chorus is busy fundraising to cover their travel and accommodation costs and they’re intending to present more concerts during 2016, which will be advertised in the local press, as well on their website: https://www.spangleschorus.com and Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SpanglesChorus/
Chorus members will be making their way to various locations to spend time with family and friends over Christmas and will return for their first rehearsal of 2016 on 7 January. Visitors are always welcome and, if you fancy a new hobby, why not go along to a rehearsal to find out more? They rehearse at Centro Municipal Las Claras in Los Narejos, Los Alcázares from 10.00 until 13.00 every Thursday.
Here’s a few memories from our 2015 festive season (click on a photo to rotate the images). Apologies for those that are sideways on.
Merry Christmas everyone!
