Soon after Spangles gained a national silver medal at the SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) annual convention in Benalmádena, Málaga, two chorus members took part in a 60 kilometre walk to help raise funds and awareness for the DEBRA charity, which is dedicated to helping people who suffer from the painful genetic skin condition Epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Their mission is to offer specialist care to those who need it. They give support to people and families affected and provide real hope for the future by supporting pioneering research which will one day find a cure.
DEBRA focuses its work in three areas:
They provide an enhanced specialist EB Nursing Service, to deliver optimal healthcare to children and adults living with EB.
They provide social care support to help people live with dignity. This is a service parents and people with EB can call on, to reach out for advice, advocacy and emergency grants. We provide access to specially adapted holiday homes and opportunities for social interaction.
They support pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB.
Wendy Grant and Sandy Bailey were the only two fundraisers who actually walked the whole 60 kilometres and had been in training for several months before the event. “It’s a great way to get fit” Wendy remarked “and raise money for such a worthy cause. Anything that we can do to help make lives better for people with this debilitating skin condition is worthwhile. We’re very grateful to all our sponsors, especially the Spangles girlies, for helping us to raise an amazing 410€, which went towards the final grand total of 5,600€ for DEBRA. Without your support people with EB would not benefit from these services.”
Spangles also raised a further 545€ at their February singout at the C Breeze cocktail bar in Playa Flamenca. They had a busy schedule of rehearsals, in preparation for the SABS contest, but were happy to take time out to go and sing at this annual charity event. “We always get such a warm welcome from Derrick and the customers and staff at C Breeze; it’s an absolute pleasure to help raise funds for local charities” said Anthea Prentice, Co-Chorus Manager. “So far, we have donated 275€ to Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters (LIPS), who are always in need of support, and we will elect another charity for the remaining 270€ very soon.” If you think your charity should benefit, why not email Spangles at firstname.lastname@example.org?
Spangles is back in the rehearsal saddle once more and enjoying the freedom of learning some new repertoire songs now that the pressure of competition has abated. Their next singout will be at Spanglish in Balsicas on Sunday, 24 June. Never ones to rest on their laurels, they will be back in contest mode later this year, in readiness for the SABS 2019 national chorus contest. “It’s an ideal opportunity for anyone who is thinking about joining a local chorus to come and see us. ” said Anthea.
Spangles is a ladies’ a cappella chorus, singing in four part harmony. They rehearse every Thursday, from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm at Centro Municipal Las Claras, Calle Helena, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares and visitors are always welcome.
We love to get into the festive spirit in the lead up to Christmas and 2017 has been another exceptional season for us, raising charity funds in several venues.
“This has been our busiest year yet for requests to sing at people’s Christmas celebrations” said Wendy Grant, Chorus Musical Director.
The holiday season started with three events – the first at the Spanglish Bar in Balsicas, with the ladies helping turn on the Christmas lights. This was swiftly followed by a Christmas Fair at the Iceland in San Javier, raising money for APAH animal rescue charity and a Singout the following day at La Zenia Boulevard, supporting the Pink Ladies’ Santa Walk, raising money for the AECC. Four days later, they were singing at the Nosmo King function at the Restaurante Paraiso, Torrevieja.
Spangles held their traditional Christmas Concert at Las Claras in Los Alcázares on 8 December. “Our favourite Christmas singout was yet to come” commented Lyn Baines, Co-Chorus Manager. “We were delighted to sing for the residents and staff of the Residencia Lozar in Pozo Aledo. They always give us a warm welcome and it’s a pleasure to sing for them each year.”
They had their traditional Christmas lunch on 14 December, but it wasn’t over! They had been invited back to the C Breeze Cocktail Bar in Playa Flamenca to help raise funds for charity. They raised 200€ and nominated Los Hermanitos Children’s Home in Altea and Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters to receive 100€ each. The children wanted a new TV and it was plain that 100€ would not be enough, so the chorus members rallied round and chipped in. Wendy and Lyn went to Altea on 6 January to present them with their new TV, much to the delight of everyone.
2018 looks like being another busy year for Spangles who will be straight back into rehearsals at Las Claras, Los Narejos, Los Alcázares in January, as they get ready to compete in the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers’ (SABS) national chorus contest in April.
Are you looking for a New Year resolution? Want to meet new people? Sing a bit? Fancy joining this champion chorus? Spangles always welcomes new members and it’s a great way to make new friends, so why not visit when they rehearse at Las Claras from January onwards? The group meets every Thursday from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.

Help is at hand! The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) is offering a free “LEARN TO SING HARMONY IN A DAY” course on Saturday, 20 May 2017 in LOS ALCÁZARES
Gain invaluable experience from members of SABS triple gold medallists, Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, and their Musical Director, Wendy Grant. Learn the techniques to help you to improve your singing. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their voice and to learn about singing four-part harmony”, comments Wendy. “Those with lower voices are particularly welcome as, in our experience, they have often been told in the past that they can’t sing, which is usually far from the truth.”
SABS President, Lyn Baines, says “We will learn a new song together and in the afternoon we will perform it for friends and family. Our method of teaching has been really successful both in the UK and in Spain, and we are expecting an enthusiastic response.”
There are limited places available, so make sure that you contact SABS by Sunday, 30 April to secure your place – email email@example.com now.
The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) was formed in October 2008 with the aim of encouraging the people of Spain to enjoy this unique form of a cappella, four-part harmony singing. SABS currently has members throughout Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. If you would like to find out more, please visit their website: www.sabs.es
Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus joined forces with the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Rondalla son del Mar Menor groups in a benefit concert to raise funds for those who lost everything in the devastating floods in Los Alcázares, just before Christmas. The auditorium was packed as Spangles followed the Agrupación Coral Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion onto the stage. Spangles’ popularity continues to grow and they were able to invite their new ladies to join them in songs that they had already learned. Spangles finished their set with a debut performance of ‘Eres Tu’ which stunned the predominantly Spanish audience with a serious ‘goosebump moment’.
All three groups came together for a finale of the Himno Independencia Municipal which celebrates the municipal autonomy of Los Alcázares, which was granted on 13 October 1983. “It was a pleasure and an honour to be included in this very significant event to help our local community and we are certain that this will lead to further collaborations in the future.” commented Spangles MD, Wendy Grant. On the night, the concert raised a 1475€ and donations are still coming in.

Lots of hard work on our contest songs with Jack Pinto during the day, followed by an evening of fun and hilarity in twenties style. We really know how to party! Thanks to Jane Dales for the photos:

This was swiftly followed by a Christmas Fair at the Palm Lounge in Cabo de Palos, raising money for a local animal rescue charity. Two days later, they were singing their hearts out at the Cruz Azul animal charity’s Christmas Fair at the Bulevar Oasis in Los Alcázares.
Spangles held their traditional Christmas Concert at the town hall in Los Alcázares on 9 December and were delighted to help Crescendo Choir raise a staggering 975€ for Age Concern at a concert in Torrevieja the following day.

But it wasn’t over! From Pozo Aledo, Spangles went on to sing a private ladies’ lunch in Sucina!
After a short Christmas break and with many still visiting family, a small group of Spangles chorus members entered a carol competition featuring local traditional choirs and bands. This was organised by the Asociación Cultural Bahía Traíña.
“It was an honour to be offered the opportunity to demonstrate the barbershop style of singing to a new Spanish audience” remarked Wendy “And we were delighted with third place in our first non-barbershop contest.”
