From Strength to Strength, Despite Pandemic

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has coped well with whatever this pandemic has thrown at them. “The past two years have been unprecedented but we’re a very supportive team that’s great at facing challenges and coming out on top” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “2021 was no exception!” In 2020 the Chorus turned a negative into a positive by recruiting “virtual” members who, together with existing members, were coached individually by Musical Director, Valerie Lynch. Once restrictions were lifted, and following strict safety guidelines, the chorus were able to meet again to practice in person, adapting to each new regulation as it came along. The Christmas season is always busy for…

    Thanksgiving 2021

As you probably know, Valerie, our MD, hails from New York. She hasn’t been back to see her family and friends in three years, although she stays in touch with everyone via video links, but it’s not quite the same, especially when it comes to Thanksgiving. Many of us had never been to a Thanksgiving dinner, so Valerie planned one for November 2020, only to be thwarted by more restrictions when another Covid wave swept through Spain. So, this year, she was determined to make it happen and it was planned with meticulous precision, right down to her Grandmother’s cranberry sauce recipe, ably assisted by the wonderful staff at Peaky…

    Radio Gaga!

We were excited to be interviewed by presenter, Victor, from Radio Onda Regional. He had heard us singing the week before, while he was having a meeting at Las Claras, and asked to meet us. The following week, he returned and we did a live interview on the radio. Conchita was the star of the day – she’s an absolute natural and definitely missed her calling! We had a lot of fun and we will be invited to sing at the radio station as soon as restrictions allow. Here are some memories from that day. Listen to the interview:

    Be a Virtual Spangle!

Bored? Fed up? But love singing? Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus is offering you a golden opportunity to do something about it, despite the restrictions. “The pandemic has thrown up some challenges for us as a chorus, but we’ve risen to them and managed to keep singing” says their American Musical Director, Valerie Lynch; who took over as MD at the start of lockdown in March 2020. Determined not to be beaten by the pandemic, Spangles’ management team devised ways that the chorus could stay together and sing together. Chorus Manager (and tech whizz), Lyn Baines, explains: “We tried Zoom and all those other wonderful online meeting apps, but none would…

    Día de la Mujer Concert

It was an absolute pleasure to celebrate International Women’s Day with the Concejal de Cultura, D. Antonio Luís López Campoy, and members of the Los Alcázares Town Hall. We took the opportunity to hand over a cheque for 1100€ which was collected for those affected by the September flooding. We were grateful for the presence of Miguel from the Rondalla Son del Mar Menor, who helped raise such a marvellous sum. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate with us and thank you to the Alcalde, D. Mario Ginés Pérez Cervera, for the beautiful petunias, presented to every woman in the chorus and in the audience, to celebrate the…

St David’s Day at C Breeze

Thank you to Derrick, the staff and customers of C Breeze for a really special night. We always look forward to singing for such an appreciative audience and St David’s Day was no exception. We were so pleased to sing Myfanwy for you all and it was lovely to have you join in – what fabulous voices you all have! You almost brought us to tears when you all sang the Welsh National Anthem too! Thank you so much for your generosity too, raising 250€ for Help at Home Costa Blanca and supporting our trip to Belgium with another 250€ – we are truly blessed! This has to be our…

    A Busy Christmas

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus is always busy in the lead up to Christmas each year, but 2019 has been a bumper year for festive events. Starting in November, they sang at 12 Christmas events, ending with a standing ovation at the U3A Christmas meeting in Torrevieja on 16 December. Spangles also supported fundraising events for local charities MABS San Javier, Cruz Azul Murcia and Finca La Castellana in San Miguel de Salinas. “It’s been a very busy year for the chorus, but Christmas is our favourite time” said Chorus Manager, Lyn. “We get great pleasure in giving something back to the community and we certainly do that with our support…

    A Night at the Oscars

A night at the Oscars was the theme of our fifteenth anniversary and everyone got glammed up for the occasion. What a fabulous night of reminiscences, fun and laughter we had. The event wouldn’t have been complete without our long-standing friend and entertainer, Barrington, who sang and joined in the fun. Thanks to Ryan, for some fab photos on the red carpet!

    Corales en el Mar

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus featured amongst the choruses and choirs taking part in the XIX Corales en El Mar concert in Los Alcázares last weekend. “This is one of the favourite concerts on the Spangles calendar and we feel honoured and privileged to take part each year” remarked Musical Director, Wendy Grant. Spangles delighted the predominantly Spanish audience by performing some songs in Spanish: Eres Tu, La Bamba, Cuando Calienta el Sol, as well as their signature piece, in Maori, Pokare Kare Ana. Mayor of Los Alcázares, Mario Ginés Pérez Cervera, presented Spangles with a commemorative plaque after their performance. Established in December 2004 with just five ladies, Spangles now…
