Don’t Let Grinch Steal Your Christmas!

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus starts rehearsals in Los Alcázares, Murcia on 1 September after a well-deserved summer break. It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to dust off their Christmas songs in readiness for many engagements during November and December.  If you’ve toyed with the idea of joining a chorus, Spangles is offering you an ideal opportunity to ease gently into the art of singing four-part harmony, a cappella style – which means without an instrumental backing -. during the festive season. No need to panic if you don’t read music, Spangles provides teaching tracks to make life really easy for you and they will be with you every step…

    A June Wedding for Spangles

The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, of which Spangles is a founding member, recently reached out to respond to an urgent enquiry. County Councilor Brian O’Donoghue from Rathvilly, County Carlow in Ireland, planned to marry at the Hotel Perla Marina in Nerja, Málaga. He wanted to surprise his bride-to-be, Miriam, with a serenade or two by a barbershop ensemble while she was getting ready on her big day. Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines, contacted Brian straight away and gave him links to recent performances. He was very impressed with what he saw and agreed that a sextet would be ideal for the occasion. Musical Director, Valerie Lynch, set to work and…

    Spangles on Tour

Spangles Ladies Harmony Chorus travelled to Valencia city last week, to join two choruses from San Antonio, Texas, for a concert in the magnificent Iglesia San Esteban.  The group travelled by train from Murcia and Alicante, proud to wear their new ‘walking out’ uniforms, kindly sponsored by A1 Mortgages UK, Paul’s Places in the Sun and Insurance Agents from Los Alcázares.  “We are so lucky to have such wonderful sponsors and many people have remarked on how smart our new uniforms are” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “After over two years of restrictions, this trip to Valencia was a much-needed boost and the new uniform just topped it off.” With…

From Strength to Strength, Despite Pandemic

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has coped well with whatever this pandemic has thrown at them. “The past two years have been unprecedented but we’re a very supportive team that’s great at facing challenges and coming out on top” said Chorus Manager, Lyn Baines. “2021 was no exception!” In 2020 the Chorus turned a negative into a positive by recruiting “virtual” members who, together with existing members, were coached individually by Musical Director, Valerie Lynch. Once restrictions were lifted, and following strict safety guidelines, the chorus were able to meet again to practice in person, adapting to each new regulation as it came along. The Christmas season is always busy for…

    Thanksgiving 2021

As you probably know, Valerie, our MD, hails from New York. She hasn’t been back to see her family and friends in three years, although she stays in touch with everyone via video links, but it’s not quite the same, especially when it comes to Thanksgiving. Many of us had never been to a Thanksgiving dinner, so Valerie planned one for November 2020, only to be thwarted by more restrictions when another Covid wave swept through Spain. So, this year, she was determined to make it happen and it was planned with meticulous precision, right down to her Grandmother’s cranberry sauce recipe, ably assisted by the wonderful staff at Peaky…

    Radio Gaga!

We were excited to be interviewed by presenter, Victor, from Radio Onda Regional. He had heard us singing the week before, while he was having a meeting at Las Claras, and asked to meet us. The following week, he returned and we did a live interview on the radio. Conchita was the star of the day – she’s an absolute natural and definitely missed her calling! We had a lot of fun and we will be invited to sing at the radio station as soon as restrictions allow. Here are some memories from that day. Listen to the interview:

    It’s Been a While!

After eighteen long months of online coaching and safely-distanced, masked rehearsals, Spangles performed in public for the first time at La Torre Golf Resort in Roldan, Murcia. “It was the best feeling ever to stand together and make music for an audience again. We have so missed not having public performances and it was thrilling to be back in public. “ said Valerie Lynch, Musical Director. The resort holds a market every Wednesday and Friday evening during July and August, which is attended by approximately 750 people. Spangles sang in a beautiful setting, which allowed them to safely-distance and sing in the open air to an audience of more than…

    Virtually Spangles

So, just how is it possible to qualify as a chorus member in these restrictive, pandemic times? Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has found a solution and four members have proved that it’s possible to learn songs and pass auditions from a distance. When the first lockdown started, Spangles’ management team had to think on its feet to keep everyone engaged and focused. Zoom meetings were fun to keep in touch with each other but, because of latency, it was impossible for everyone to sing together. Luckily, the chorus has a totally dedicated Musical Director in Valerie Lynch, who was willing to give up two days every week to offer individual,…
